Villarreal snap up Mellberg

Swedish defender Olof Mellberg has joined Villarreal for their attempt to bounce back to La Primera at the first time of asking.

The Castellon club have confirmed the central defender will sign a one-year contract at El Madrigal after spending the last three years in Greece with Olympiacos.

Villarreal boss Julio Velazquez has been searching for an experienced central defender to replace Cristian Zapata, who has left for Milan, and Mellberg certainly fits the bill having represented his country on 117 occasions.

It is not the first time Mellberg will have played in Spain. The 34-year-old spent three years with Racing Santander between 1998 and 2001 whilst he has also enjoyed spells in England and Italy with Aston Villa, Everton and Juventus.

Mellberg becomes the Segunda outfit’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of right-back Javi Venta from Levante, with the club hoping to officially unveil the Swede at midday on Thursday.
