Javi Martinez: Bilbao know my decision

Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez says he has already informed the club of his decision over whether to remain at San Mames next season.

Martinez has been strongly linked with a summer switch to Barcelona, with conflicting reports in the Press debating his valuation and his preferred destination.

“Over the holidays I have explained everything relating to this matter,” the Spanish international told El Correo.

“I also said that during Euro 2012 I did not want to be constantly thinking about the same thing. Athletic already know my decision.”

The versatile 23-year-old, who was employed in central defence as well as his customary midfield position last term, was speaking after training with the Spanish Olympic squad before Wednesday’s friendly with the Mexican Olympic team at the Estadio Ramon de Carranza in Cadiz.

Martinez said Luis Milla’s team must stick with the style of play that has brought the national team success in the World Cup and European Championship, despite Friday’s shock 2-0 defeat to Senegal in Gran Canaria, but acknowledged ‘there are differences because the Coach and players are different’.

“It will be important to start the Olympic tournament well but our experience in major competitions should stand us in good stead,” he explained.
