Martinez rules out Bilbao exit

Javi Martinez has scotched rumours he is to leave Athletic Bilbao, saying he still expects to be with Los Leones in four years time.

“I still see myself at Athletic in 2016,” Martinez told Antena 3, indicating he intends to complete his contract with the club, and also revealed he gives little or no importance to stories that emerge every year suggesting he will quit the Basques.

“If that was the case, not only this year but in others, then with everything that has come out I would have already played for seven teams,” he argued.

The versatile 23-year-old, who is equally at home in midfield or central defence, stated he wanted to continue his good form with Luis Milla’s Spain team in the Olympic Games, while insisting that to play at Sam Mames is a privilege.

“If you like football then you must go to San Mames because that is football in its purest form.

“There are now Athletic fans in many parts of Spain because of how we played last year,” he added.
