Cruyff advises Ajax to sign Muniesa

Johan Cruyff has advised his former club Ajax to ask Barcelona if they are prepared to sell defender Marc Muniesa.

According to De Telegraaf, it is understood Barcelona legend Cruyff told Ajax’s new director of football Marc Overmars, himself a former Barca player, that the 20-year-old could be tempted away from the Camp Nou after making just one La Liga appearance last term.

Even so, Overmars is remaining non-committal and says ‘nothing has been decide in this regard’, although sources in Holland believe Muniesa would be the ideal replacement for Jan Vertonghen who has just signed for Tottenham Hotspur in a €12m deal.

The versatile Muniesa, however, could still have a role to play with La Blaugrana as new boss Tito Vilanova assembles his squad for pre-season training on Monday, particularly since Carles Puyol has been injured long-term and new acquisition Jordi Alba could need some recovery time after Euro 2012 and his possible selection for Spain’s Olympic squad.
