Real Madrid may have a left-back problem at the start of next season as Marcelo says he wants to go to the Olympic Games this summer.
Brazil boss Mano Menezes has selected the 24-year-old in his provisional squad for London – one of three over-age players – but is expected to speak with Madrid boss Jose Mourinho this week to hear his thoughts on Marcelo’s participation.
If Mourinho gives his consent, Marcelo will be the only player to miss Los Blancos’ pre-season preparations as the football tournament begins on July 25 and finishes on August 11, a period when Real will be enjoying a tour of the United States and just one week before the start of the 2012-13 season – not ideal for Mourinho or the player.
However, Marcelo feels it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and would not like to miss out on the chance to win a gold medal.
“I want to go to the Olympic Games. I am working very hard and would like to take part because we all want to go to the Olympics,” he admitted on the Brazilian Football Confederation’s official website.
“I am in the prime of my career and want to enjoy it to the maximum but whatever Jose Mourinho decides I will do.”
