Real Betis have sealed a major coup by tying down star midfielder Isco Alarcon to a new three-year deal, following an exceptional first half of the season at the Benito Villamarin.
Isco initially signed on a short-term deal for a season last summer, after having been over six months unemployed. His exit from Sevilla had sewn doubts about his future, but Isco returned in better shape than anyone at Betis could have imagined. The loss of previous orchestrator Sergio Canales has almost gone unnoticed.
Now, Isco has signed an extension, and sealed his future for what may well be his last stint at the top level. The Betis social media account announced it in stylish fashinon, casting teammate Aitor Ruibal as Sascha Baron Cohen character Ali G – renamed Ali Genius for Isco. Two seasons ago, they announced the signing of German Pezzella with a Grand Theft Auto theme.

When the deal expires, Isco will be 35. The ex-Real Madrid playmaker also had a release clause of €10m, but this has been increased, although it is not yet known by how much. With Nabil Fekir still not at his best following injury, Canales gone, and Betis’ various wingers struggling to have the impact they want, Isco has been the driving force behind their attack this season.
