OFFICIAL: Bayern Munich to sign Atletico Madrid’s Lucas Hernandez

Bayern Munich have announced that they will sign Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez this summer.

Bayern confirmed in a Press release on Wednesday afternoon that they would pay €80m for Lucas and tie him down to a five-year contract, starting on July 1.

“Today is a very important day in my football career,” the Frenchman told his new club’s official website.

“Bayern Munich are one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for every trophy with Bayern in the future.

“I’d like to thank Atletico, their management, the Coaches, my teammates and the fans for a wonderful 12 years.

“Atletico will always be a part of me, but now I’m happy that I’ll be taking my next step at Bayern.”

The 23-year-old only signed a new contract with Los Colchoneros last June but has been swayed by the project on offer in Bavaria.

Hernandez has gone on to make 110 appearances for Atleti since his debut in December 2015, winning a Europa League and European Super Cup.

Equally adept at left-back and centre-back, he was also part of the France team who won the World Cup in Russia.

However, his season has been ended early by a knee injury, with Bayern adding in their announcement that he would undergo surgery.

Lucas is the second French World Cup-winning defender to be joining the German giants this summer after Stuttgart’s Benjamin Pavard.
