Sevilla president confirms ‘very positive’ Monchi talks

Sevilla president Jose Castro has confirmed the club have held ‘very positive’ talks with sporting director Monchi over a return to the club.

The president confirmed claims that contact was made before the club’s Europa League elimination to Slavia Prague on Thursday night, with the club lagging in sixth place in La Liga.

Monchi worked at the club in the position of sporting director across 17 seasons before leaving for Roma, whom he departed just last week.

The dismissal of Coach Pablo Machin on Friday has led to Director of Football Joaquin Caparros returning to take charge of first-team affairs with the club now seeking a sporting director.

“Sevilla now need a sports director and we have looked for the best,” Castro told reporters on Friday.

“And the best is Monchi. Our conversations go well with him. The conversations have been very positive.”

The 50-year-old joined the Giallorossi in 2017 with a strong reputation after his finds – among them Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic and Seydou Keita – helped Sevilla win five Europa League titles and two Copa del Rey crowns.

However, his work in the transfer market came under mounting scrutiny at the Olimpico following a poor run of results, culminating first in the exit of Coach Eusebio Di Francesco last week.

Monchi has also been heavily linked with a move to English club Arsenal, which would see him reunited with former Sevilla boss Unai Emery.
