Pablo Machin: Franco Vazquez let Sevilla down

Pablo Machin hit out at Franco Vazquez for ‘hurting’ Sevilla with his red card during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leganes.

Vazquez was sent off for calling referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez a ‘slimeball’ after he failed to show Allan Nyom a second yellow card, and Machin was unhappy the midfielder could not keep his emotions in check at half-time.

“It’s a point that is qualitative but not quantitative,” the Coach said after the game, which left his side third in La Liga.

“They were able to take advantage of their only real chance and score from it, but we were able to overcome Mudo’s red card and the knock to Jesus [Navas].

“Playing with one less is difficult and more so when you fall behind on the scoreboard. We wanted to correct the Mudo incident.

“That desire didn’t lead us to victory, but it showed that this team have spirit and courage. Butarque is a difficult place to play, where the top team [Barcelona] have already lost.

“Mudo’s conduct surprised me greatly. One thing is what we think is fair on the field and another is what the referee blows, but that can’t make us lose our concentration or nerves.

“Clearly Mudo thought, for some reason, that Nyom could’ve been shown a second yellow,

In fact, his Coach took him off but it’s not enough justification to say something to the referee, who has to send him off.

“We can’t be affected by what doesn’t exclusively depend on us, neither can we afford the luxury of someone who is unconscious and does something that hurts the team.

“We wanted to wait for our moment on the break and be secure at the back. It was the approach that we thought could get us something positive from the game.

“We managed to come away with a point and not lose.”
