Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong: “I am not Johan Cruyff”

In-demand Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong has rejected comparisons to Barcelona and Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

The 21-year-old has previously admitted his quality lies in his ‘intuition’ on the pitch, which has led inevitably with links to Cruyff – who also starred for Ajax and the Netherlands.

“I try not to pay attention to talk of comparisons, I only want to focus on myself,” De Jong told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, as cited by Diario AS.

“It is good to hear that people are talking like that but the truth is I am not at Cruyff’s level of talent and I never will be, so it is not something I think about.”

The 21-year-old made won four caps for the Netherlands since making his debut last month and last season registered seven assists from 22 Eredivisie appearances.

He has since been linked with a series of moves away from Amsterdam, with Barcelona and Real Madrid among the clubs supposedly interested.
