Heynckes: Madrid must thank Keylor

Jupp Heynckes claims Bayern Munich ‘dominated’ Real Madrid and urged the Spaniards to ‘thank’ Keylor Navas for a ‘spectacular’ display.

“Just like my team, I’m disappointed that we’ve not gone through,” UEFA’s official website quotes the retiring Bayern boss as saying after Tuesday’s 2-2 draw, which was not enough for the Germans to reach the Champions League Final.

“We would have deserved to reach the Final. But I’m not melancholy, I take a realistic view of the result.

”If you see both games, we were the better team. We went able to reach the Final, I’m very disappointed.

“If we look at the game today, both sides played well, it was a beautiful, world class game of football.

“We dominated, I believe, and they should thank Navas for his spectacular performance, especially towards the end.

”It’s hard to take. After such a brilliant first half it’s hard to concede so early at a delicate moment.

“My squad’s morale is high and was throughout the game. We played very well and were fluid.

“All Madrid were doing was counterattacking from their own half. My team played very well.

“I hadn’t seen Bayern play so well in quite a long time, and a few of our players were injured too and to play like this at the Bernabeu in front of 80,000 with those circumstances is great.

”We can’t predict the Final. Roma and Liverpool will be facing each other – Liverpool seem more likely to make it through and I think the Final will be well balanced, a tough game. I can’t say who is favourite.

“We always have to look at the big picture, in both legs. In the first leg, after a few minutes I had to replace Robben and Boateng, so that made things a lot more difficult for us.

“We had five starters missing, so that affected the outcome of these two games but all our players are up to the task – it’s not

”My last UCL game before this season was in 2013 against Dortmund. I never thought I’d have another, but things changed.

“I can safely say this was my last game tonight! I’ll never be a manager again. That’s fine – I don’t think there’s many 72 year olds who have that decision to make!

”I’m disappointed with the result. The draw was a defeat to us. We trained and worked for nine months, built up a nice group.

“My players are all strong and it’s a real shame things should end like this. Ulreich? got confused, had a little black-out.

“He didn’t know if he could pick it up, realised he couldn’t, got nervous and that’s what happened.

“It’s a terrible thing for a player to live through. It was a bad moment for my team but we had a lot of chances to score and my keeper played really well overall.”
