Mariano ‘very happy’ at Lyon

Former Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz insists he has no regrets over leaving the club in summer to join Ligue 1 giants Olympique Lyonnais.

The Dominican Republic born striker has been in fine form this season, netting 16 goals for the French giants following his €8m summer move from Madrid.

“I’m very happy at Lyon and I feel I have improved a lot in France,” Diaz told Diario AS.

“Obviously I have scored goals but there is more to my game, but the most important thing is to help the team and continue our strong form.

“I don’t regret leaving Madrid, it was a decision I took after talking to Zinedine Zidane and the president, while Lyon gave me the opportunity to play regularly and score goals.

“Zidane informed me that Lyon would be a good opportunity with Lacazette leaving and they are a great club in a good league, his advice was helpful.

“What I needed was first-team football and more confidence, to demonstrate my ability and potential to play at the top level.

“It’s more difficult if you are not playing, but at Madrid I learned a lot from the best in the world and that benefitted me, every training session was good for me.”
