CL: Sevilla collapse at Spartak

Sevilla’s Champions League hopes took a damaging blow after they were crushed 5-1 by Spartak Moscow on Tuesday.

Despite Sevilla seeing more of the ball and having more attempts on goal, Spartak taught the Spaniards a lesson in finishing as they netted all four of their shots on target.

“We collapsed after we went 2-1 down, we messed up after we equalised and conceded more goals,” Coach Eduardo Berizzo said after the game.

“I think this defeat needs a response. We have to check on things and realise that we have to do more of everything, me being the first, finding answers to this result, which we must put right.”

Simon Kjaer had cancelled out Quincy Promes’ opener, but four goals in the final half-hour handed the Russians their first group victory in 16 years.

“I always look for solutions, I believe in a certain style of play and we’ll keep looking for our best form,” added the former Celta Vigo boss.

“We must show those things in our home game against Spartak and turn around everything negative that we feel today. We must beat them in Seville.”

Sevilla drop to third in Group E, a point behind Spartak and Liverpool but at least five goals worse off, with the Reds hammering Maribor 7-0.
