Llorente rues injury-hit start

Fernando Llorente is unhappy his start to life at Sevilla has been hampered by injury but believes both he and the team are improving.

Llorente arrived on a free transfer from Juventus late in the summer window and has managed only six appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

“If it wasn’t for the injury things would have been different,” he said, AS reports, after attending a sponsor’s event in Seville.

“Now all I’m thinking about is being as good as possible. I’m improving, I’m with the group, and I want to be at my best as soon as possible.

“I’m looking forward, rather than backward. I’ve hardly been able to play since I joined. I want to be at my best to return the affection the fans have given me.

“It’s clear Sevilla is a great club. There’s a lot of competition. Everyone who comes here has to give everything. It’s hard being this team’s No 9.

“The team has changed a lot of players this year, so we needed to adapt. That’s why we haven’t started well but we’re doing more. In the last game you saw a better Sevilla.

“It’s an important time in the calendar. First it’s Villarreal, a direct rival who lead us by five points. We want to close the gap and return the club to where it should be, in the top positions.

“We have to win every game in the Champions League to go through. But we’re not worried, because if we stay on the current trajectory we’ll pick up in the League.

“But we don’t want to forget the Champions League, because we want to get out the group phase.”
