Former Spain international Albert Riera has joined Slovenian side NK Zavrc on a contract believed to be worth €2,000 per month.
The 33-year-old left Mallorca in the summer following a bust-up with then-Coach Miquel Soler and has since decided to resurrect his career in Slovenia, with reports claiming he has agreed a minimal wage, which nonetheless makes him the club’s best-paid player.
“I’m prepared to do my bit for the team. I can be a role model for the players,” he told local media, as per Sport.
“We can do something big [referring to his new side being fifth in the Slovenian League after nine matches, 10 points behind leaders Olimpia].
Zavrc director Vuk Miran added: “He wants to enjoy his football. It goes beyond money because he’s already earned enough.
Riera, who can play anywhere down the left and counts Mallorca, Bordeaux, Manchester City, Espanyol, Liverpool, Olympiakos and Galatasaray among his former clubs, earned 16 caps for Spain, scoring three goals and representing the team at the 2009 Confederations Cup.
However, he has made just 14 appearances for Udinese, Watford and Mallorca since March 2014, failing to play at all for the former.
