TV rights decree approved

A major change to how La Liga’s television rights are sold has moved closer after the Spanish government approved a royal decree for a collective sale.

AS reports that after a three-hour meeting on Thursday it has been confirmed a three-year collective rights package will be put up for auction.

It’s believed the LFP stands to take in €1000m from the sale, which could go ahead this summer for the 2015-16 season, even though some clubs have individual rights agreements.

Of the money the rights sale raises, 93% will go to the clubs in the top two divisions, with the overwhelming majority of that for the Primera.

The other 7% is split between parachute payments for relegated teams, the LFP, the RFEF, the AFE and other sources.

AS note that the AFE, the Spanish players’ union, are not happy with their cut of the deal and their leader, Luis Rubiales, has called a meeting for Tuesday to discuss their next step.

Half of the Primera clubs' percentage of the deal will be distributed according to League positions over the last five years, while the other half will be distributed evenly.
