Adelardo: Give Torres time

Atletico Madrid legend Adelardo Rodriguez has asked for promising youngster Oliver Torres to be afforded some patience.

Torres came off the bench to make his debut for Diego Simeone’s side in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Levante, impressing in midfield to demonstrate why he has been the target of reported attention from English powerhouses Manchester United and Chelsea.

However, Atleti’s three-time La Liga winner Adelardo is asking that the player be given some time to develop.

“To make your debut for Atletico at the age of 17 is remarkable, but he is young and should not be rushed as he is still a child,” the 72-year-old, who made over 500 appearances in 17 years as an Atleti player, said in an interview with Reuters.

“He has quality and control, but this is a huge step up in the divisions for him. Other players often have time in the lower leagues put he has made the immediate jump.

“I arrived at Atletico when I was 19, but when I was 17 I was still working my way up through the Second Division and it was there that I learnt how hard football really is. Oliver will have to do the same but at a higher level.”
