Malaga to sign Saviola

Malaga are set to sign Benfica striker Javier Saviola on Monday, reports Diaro Sur.

The diminutive Argentine international arrived on the Costa del Sol on Sunday and is expected to put pen to paper after reaching a decision to rescind his contract with the Portuguese giants.

Los Blanquiazules have been prevented from signing players over the summer due to money owed for the transfers of Santi Cazorla, Ignacio Monreal and Diego Buonanotte.

However, cash received from the sales of Cazorla and Jose Salomon Rondon to Arsenal and Rubin Kazan respectively have helped pay off those debts and boss Manuel Pellegrini is now looking to strengthen his now paper-thin squad, particularly up front.

Malaga, who have a Champions League qualifying round clash  with Panathinaikos on Wednesday, are hopeful Saviola will be available for the game as Pellegrini has just three strikers to call upon in Seba Fernandez, Joaquin Sanchez and Juanmi.

Saviola, 30, has a wealth of experience having also played for River Plate, Barcelona, Monaco, Sevilla and Real Madrid, yet he has fallen out of favour with boss Jorge Jesus at the Estadio Da Luz.

Despite an impressive first season in 2009-10 when he scored 19 goals in 44 games in all competitions, his scoring ratio has since declined – nine goals in 24 appearances the following year – culminating in him playing just 818 minutes last term with four goa
