‘Wednesday historic for Malaga’

Goalkeeper Willy Caballero is already counting down to Malaga’s Champions League Play-off match with Panathinaikos this midweek.

The Costa del Sol side finished fourth in La Liga last term and have qualified for this two-legged Play-off round, where the winners will progress to the group stages of the Champions League.

It is a competition that the club have never played in and, despite their current financial state, is still eagerly anticipated.

“Everyone has been waiting since the last day of last season for this match,” Caballero told reporters today as preparations begin.

“The players and everyone else have prepared game by game, but I think that the fans are anticipating this game even more than us. We are eager to see the stadium and how it will be packed.”

The shot-stopper also had a word for 16-year-old Fabrice Olinga, who in scoring Malaga’s only goal in their 1-0 win at Celta Vigo yesterday, became the youngest goalscorer in La Liga’s history.

“He is still very young and still very shy, but he has spent pre-season with the first team. He has many qualities and hopefully these will show in the field.

“He has to continue correcting and improving and we will help him in training and in matches to become a much better player.”
