In recent months, Barcelona sporting director Deco has been working on the contract renewals of several first team players. Pedri, Gavi and Ronald Araujo are all in discussions, while Frenkie de Jong’s case has been slightly difficult – he has had an offer on the table, but until now, it has not been answered.

And now, it will not be answered. According to MD, Barcelona have decided to withdraw the contract offer that had been sent to de Jong – their primary intention is to now sell him next summer, although it is not ruled out that a new offer arrives before the end of the season.

Marc Casado’s meteoric rise over the last few months has been de Jong’s prominence at Barcelona drop significantly, especially with Pedri also performing at a very high level. Marc Bernal will also be back at the start of next season, meaning that the 27-year-old Dutchman is no longer needed as he once was. Barcelona recognise this, which is why they are more willing to move him on.

  1. Hopefully he’ll agree to a sale and not decide to “play out” his contract from the bench so he can leave as a free agent.

It would be good for both parties if he left; he’s a very good player but I see him as a bit too passive for Flick’s system and he’d likely be happier and more effective someplace else.
