Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said after their victory over Rayo Vallecano that it was a ‘sad victory’ due to a late injury to Marc Bernal. Initial fears that Bernal had torn his anterior cruciate ligament have been confirmed, and the diagnosis is even worse than first believed too.
The 17-year-old was enjoying his first minutes in senior football, and impressing for Flick, starting all three of Barcelona’s games this season so far. However an innocuous coming together with Isi Palazon on Tuesday night saw him go off injured.

As per TV3, Bernal has not only torn his ACL, but has also injured his meniscus, making it much more complicated to recover from, and potentially requiring two operations. In all likelihood, it increases his recovery time from 7-9 months to 11-12 months. The news has since been confirmed by the club.

Gavi, who was injured in November last year, suffered both an ACL tear and a meniscus tear too, sent Bernal a message saying that ‘I know it’s hard, but you’ll come back stronger on Instagram’. The Spain international is on course to be back after a year out himself.
Always terrible to see a young player get a serious injury.
Get better soon!
