Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will hopefully have a much clearer idea of how he wants his side and squad to look for the coming season, after their tour in the USA. One of their veteran defenders appears to be in his plans.
Centre-back Inigo Martinez has plenty of competition for places this season, but it appears that he has convinced Flick of his value. Relevo note that he has asked Barcelona to register Martinez for the second year of his deal before their league debut against Valencia next week. The 33-year-old was only registered for the first year of his two-year contract, after moving from Athletic Club last summer.

There had been some suggestion he could move on, with his contract yet to be registered, and seven other options in central defence: Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen, Mikayil Faye and Clement Lenglet, albeit the Uruguayan likely won’t play the rest of the year. It seems Martinez is in the top four or five of those options for Flick. The Blaugrana make their Liga debut against Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday the 17th of August.
