Chelsea could find home for unwanted star at Real Madrid as 25-year-old’s future remains uncertain

Despite having agreed terms on a new long-term deal, Andriy Lunin is yet to sign a contract renewal with Real Madrid. The Ukrainian goalkeeper’s future remains uncertain, and it could have an impact on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Lunin, 25, had agreed a new deal, but was yet to sign it, and his future has been up in the air for months. After winning the starting spot in Thibaut Courtois’ absence, Lunin is now back to being a back-up, and will have to work out whether he wants a fresh challenge or play a minor role for Los Blancos again.

Before agreeing a new deal, some at Real Madrid suspected that the hiring of Jorge Mendes earlier this season was a move aimed at getting Lunin one. However in the final weeks of the season, it seemed likely he would continue, but after being dropped for the Champions League final, many in the dressing room, and even the coaching staff, thought he would look for a move following some slightly more somber celebrations.

According to Marca, with Lunin yet to sign a new deal, they are not ruling out a move for him this summer, although his poor Euro 2024 campaign was not the shop window he might have hoped – Lunin was dropped after the first game for Ukraine.

If Lunin continues, then Real Madrid will keep the status quo, but if he were to move on, Kepa has been mentioned as a potential alternative. He is returning to Chelsea from his loan deal, but has just a year left on his deal, and the Blues are expected to look for an exit for him. If Lunin moves on, then Kepa had frequently voiced his desire to stay at the club beyond his loan, and he could be a cheap but quality back-up.
