Real Sociedad confident of retaining midfield maestro despite worrying contract situation

Real Sociedad could part ways with several key players over the summer, with Robin Le Normand and Martin Zubimendi among those to be linked with a move away during the upcoming transfer window. Mikel Merino could also be on his way, and his situation is the most worrisome of the lot.

Merino’s current contract expires in 2025, and so far, contract talks have yet to take place. Despite this, La Real are relaxed about the situation, and sporting director Roberto Olabe has revealed that offers will not be considered for the Spanish midfielder, as per MD.

“I’m not thinking about the sale. The conversation with Mikel will always be direct, sincere and serious, because of what he has experienced. If that scenario comes we should decide what is worth more, if Merino’s performance for one year or a transfer, but we do our best to make him see that this is his place. At the age of 27, he has recognised that his decision is not a sporting one, but a life one, and we are talking to Mikel with the intention of making him stay.”

If terms cannot be agreed over the summer, it’s entirely possible that Real Sociedad look to cash in on Merino. If that does happen, many clubs would surely take an interest, although for now, the situation is calm.
