Real Madrid star desperate to inherit Toni Kroos’ squad number

The fallout continues from Toni Kroos’ announcement that he will be retiring from football after this summer’s European Championship in his homeland of Germany. The 34-year-old, despite still being one of the best midfielders in the world, will play his final match for Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Many personnel associated with Real Madrid have paid tribute to Kroos this week, including teammate Federico Valverde. As per Diario AS, the Uruguayan issued a lovely message for Kroos, who issued a very interesting response in reply.

“You have absolutely everything to be the captain of this team in the future. I’m always going to be by your side, and tomorrow we’ll talk about another topic… #8.”

The report goes on to say that Valverde’s dream is wear number 8 for Real Madrid, and with Kroos leaving, it opens the door for him to take the squad number for next season onwards. It would be richly deserved, and it will come entirely with Kroos’ blessing.
