Key player at Atletico Madrid facing uncertain future as transfer situation remains open

This summer’s transfer window looks like being increasing busy for Atletico Madrid, with head coach Diego Simeone keen to overhaul his squad after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. One area that will not actively be addressed is in goal, but they may be forced to do so if first-choice ‘keeper Jan Oblak.

Oblak’s situation has been the subject of increasing speculation over the last few weeks, and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Atleti will not stand in the Slovenian stopper’s way if he decides to leave in the summer, provided that an acceptable offer is received.

Oblak has been at Atleti for almost 10 years, and although he remains an undisputed starter, they are prepared to let him go if he wishes. Giorgi Mamardashvili is one of the names linked as a possible replacement if he departs, although it’s worth noting that the Valencia ‘keeper is edging closer to signing for Newcastle United.

Oblak remains a top goalkeeper, although he has been in a decline over the last couple of seasons. If Atletico Madrid can receive a big offer in the summer, it would make sense to move him on for a younger alternative – Mamardashvili would be perfect in that regard.
