Doubts raised over Real Madrid star’s departure following Toni Kroos announcement

On Tuesday, Toni Kroos announced that he would be retiring from football after this summer’s European Championship in his homeland of Germany. It means that his final Real Madrid match will be the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund in 10 days’ time, with his final Santiago Bernabeu appearance set for this weekend.

Kroos is expected to be the second Real Madrid veteran to depart in the summer, after Nacho Fernandez, whose decision to leave was heavily reported a few weeks ago. However, the trail has since gone cold, which has led Marca to question whether the 34-year-old does still intend to leave, especially considering to official announcement has yet to come.

In fact, the report states that Nacho is now no longer sure of leaving Real Madrid, and he is still considering his options. It seems more likely than before that he will stay for at least another season.

Nacho staying would be a good news for Real Madrid. They already wanted to keep him, having offered a new contract, and with it being very unlikely that Leny Yoro will arrive this summer, it would allow an extra option for Carlo Ancelotti in the centre of defence.
