Luka Modric pens heartfelt tribute to Real Madrid teammate Toni Kroos – “There will never be another”

Tributes have been pouring in over the last few hours following Toni Kroos’ announcement that he will be retiring from football after this summer’s European Championship. The 34-year-old will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, and his last Real Madrid match in the Champions League final.

Perhaps the most poignant tribute to Kroos came from his long-time midfield partner Luka Modric, who delivered a fantastic message to the German maestro on Instagram.

“Toni, it is difficult for me to write these words. The world of football is sad because a historic player is leaving, and I admit I’m also very sad. Friend, you are a legend of this sport and a legend of Real Madrid. I have really enjoyed playing alongside you. It has been an honour to share the midfield of Real Madrid with you. You have qualities that make you a unique and special player, and there will never be another Toni Kroos. Unforgettable European nights, titles, the magic of the Bernabeu – we will never forget this golden era in the club of our lives. You have achieved everything but you still have one left. Together for 15. I will miss you, friend.”

Kroos’ retirement announcement does mean that it is increasingly likely that Modric will remain at Real Madrid for at least another 12 months, although there’s no doubt that he’d prefer them to be teammates.
