Sevilla talisman accuses referee of bias during defeat to Villarreal – “We suffered with him”

Sevilla fell to a bitter defeat to Villarreal on Saturday, losing 3-2 at the Ceramica despite having led twice. The winner was scored by Alexander Sorloth in the 97th minute, although there was a fair share of controversy surrounding it.

Sevilla felt that Sorloth fouled Kike Salas in the motion of scoring the winning goal, and they were furious that it was not called by referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias or VAR – and these tension spilled over once the full time whistle, as players and staff on both teams clashed.

Speaking of the controversial goal in stoppage time, Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri – who scored twice – accused Ortiz Arias of showing bias in Villarreal’s favour, as per ED.

“We also suffered with the referee. If you have to blow the whistle (for fouls), blow the whistle fairly, not just in their favour. The last one was a foul, and he has to call it.”

En-Nesyri could risk suspension for these comments, which would be very bad news for Sevilla. Earlier in the season, Girona’s David Lopez was handed a four-match ban for comments he also made about Ortiz Arias.
