Barcelona President Joan Laporta has again affirmed that he wants Xavi Hernandez to remain as manager next season, despite the latter announcing he would be leaving at the end of the season. He also seemed to imply that the matter was not settled.
Xavi has been consistent that his decision has not changed, but has often included the phrase ‘up until now’. There have been rumours that he could change his mind, despite the coach claiming that it is a decision he had come to in December.
During an interview with MD, Laporta explained that he had made his wishes clear to Xavi.
“Yes, yes, yes, yes, he already knows it, but he notices it. I would like him to continue, but I already told him at the time, when he said about the pressure, that here we are always under pressure with the experience you have… I asked him if there was any way he could change his mind, but I saw him dealing with an insurmountable pressure that could be seen on his face, so I told him to relax if he saw it that way.”
“He keeps saying that at the end of the season he would leave as we have agreed, but we’ll see. Let’s not put that pressure on ourselves because at the moment being with this formula works. Therefore, we can still say no, no, no, and…”
He would go on to say that they had not spoken with any coaches, including Luis Enrique, although he was a coach he liked. Laporta was also asked whether he would ask Xavi to say at the end of the season.
“Depending on how the season goes, he already knows. And he has the motivation that he wants to win to finish this stage with glory, or in order to think about it or continue.”
The Blaugrana seemed to be weighing up the sacking of Xavi just before his announcement, after a disappointing run came to a head with a 5-3 defeat to Villarreal. A number of managers have been linked to the job, but few are likely willing to put up with so much institutional stability, and the ability to able to make decisions or moves is likely to be limited.
