Former chief doctor at Real Madrid denies claims that Arda Guler situation led to his departure

Niko Mihic had been Real Madrid’s chief doctor until a few months ago, with the Croatian having stepped down from the role after seven years. His departure was questioned in the media, something that is rather uncommon for a doctor at a football club, but the circumstances were a hot topic.

It had been claimed that Real Madrid removed Mihic over his handling for Arda Guler’s recurring injury problems, which led to the Turkish teenager not being readily available to Carlo Ancelotti until 2024, six months after he joined from Fenerbahce.

Speaking to Relevo, Mihic has denied those claims, and revealed that he is still employed at Real Madrid in an advisory role.

“My relationship with Arda Guler is excellent, I love him very much. We are in continuous contact, it had nothing to do with it. My departure from the club had been contemplated by mutual agreement several months before it happened. The news came out in the press in an inopportune way, but it has nothing to do with Arda Guler.

“I have a contract (with Real Madrid). I’m delighted to continue to be linked with them. My club will always be with Real Madrid, along with Dinamo Zagreb, which is the other club I have in my heart. I think the club values my experience and what the club has contributed during these seven seasons. I greatly value the possibility of continuing to collaborate with them and I am at their disposal, at their service, with all the discretion in the world.”

Guler has suffered no injury problems since he recovered back in January, which is something that Real Madrid will be very pleased about. It’s not known whether that is linked to the fact that Mihic is no longer chief doctor, although Los Blancos have continued to suffer worrying injuries in the meantime.
