Barcelona target ruled out of race to replace Xavi Hernandez

Barcelona will not bring back Luis Enrique this summer, after confirmation that what seemed a highly unlikely deal will not be happening. The Asturian coach is nine months into his two-year deal at Paris Saint-Germain, and all parties are happy with how things are going.

It emerged that the treble-winner was one of Sporting Director Deco’s preferences to take over from Xavi Hernandez, feeling that he met all of the requirements in terms of style, character and knowledge of the club.

However Sport have confirmed that Luis Enrique, who is highly coveted around Europe, has no intention of leaving the French capital this summer. PSG have no intention of facilitating an exit either, as they are happy with his work in a transition season, feeling that he has handled things well on the way to a probable Ligue 1 title, as they are nine points clear currently.

Several seemingly far-fetched candidates have emerged in recent weeks in contention for the Barcelona job, one of which being Mikel Arteta of Arsenal. That is despite the fact that the Basque manager had strenuously denied any contact with the Blaugrana. It is worth wondering if these links are part of a media strategy as much as a sporting one.
