Granada to appeal Copa del Rey expulsion for improper alignment

On Tuesday, Granada were thrown out of this season’s Copa del Rey after they were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player during their victory over Arosa SC last week. Adri Lopez was deemed to not be eligible to play in the competition, as the 24-year-old is on a reserve contract, and only players under the age of 23 with this are able to play.

24 hours after the sanction was handed out, Granada issued a statement acknowledging the decision. As per their right, they have decided to issue an appeal with the Appeal Committee, with the hope of being re-instated into the Copa del Rey.

“Granada Club de Futbol has learned this Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the resolution of the Single Disciplinary Judge of the RFEF in relation to the claim of Arosa SC for alleged improper alignment of the player Adrian Lopez Garrote, during the match held on November 2, 2023 and corresponding to the First Round of the Copa del Rey.

“In his decision, the Single Disciplinary Judge considers that Granada Club de Fútbol made an improper line-up in that match.

“In view of these circumstances, Granada Club de Fútbol wishes to state that it will lodge the corresponding appeal with the Appeal Committee within the prescribed time limits.”

It remains to be seen whether Granada win their appeal, but at this stage, there will only be 19 La Liga teams in the next round of the Copa del Rey, which takes place at the beginning of December.
