Two potential successors to Joan Laporta for Barcelona presidency named

Barcelona President Joan Laporta intimated at the club general assembly on Saturday that he would be happy to run for a second term in 2025, and his third term overall. However with that still two years away, and a criminal case against him currently being investigated, a lot can happen in that time.

With Barcelona split down political lines for the most part in terms of the presidency, Bar Canaletes have revealed two potential successors to Laporta, in the event that he does not end up running, or for further down the line.

One of them is current director Joan Soler. Previously the person responsible for organising the sporting side of things under the presidential campaign of Jordi Farre in 2016, Soler has had a ‘meteoric rise’ according to Sport, and is now one of Laporta’s most trusted colleagues.

He has been present at club events in Saudi Arabia, and at the Champions League draw, while his knowledge of the footballing world and his low profile have won the respect of his peers. Currently he acts as a spokesperson and works within the academy structure.

Meanwhile Economic Vice-President Eduard Romeu is another that Laporta may consider annointing when the time is right. Taking a prominent role during the assembly, Romeu has spoken to the media on multiple occasions, and is trusted to handle important business these days.

If either does run, they are likely to face competition from Victor Font. Behind the ‘Si al Futur’ – ‘Yes to the future’ – campaign, Font was Laporta’s closest rival during the last elections. As things stand, the two are likely to do battle again in 2025.
