Sevilla manager Diego Alonso gives assessment of Arsenal ahead of Champions League clash

Sevilla manager Diego Alonso has declared that he has no fear of Arsenal in their Champions League clash, but did acknowledge that Los Nervionenses are in need of points, after just two from their opening two matches.

Alonso is fresh in the job, having been appointed in the international break, replacing Jose Luis Mendilibar. His first experience as a coach in Europe, he started off well against Real Madrid this Saturday, with a 1-1 draw.

“We face a team that two days ago was the leader of the Premier League. In addition to having great qualities, they is very well trained. They know what they want, they are very good and we will have to fight in all parts of the field.”

Sevilla looked to hold the ball and control it more often than previously against Los Blancos, something that could be key against Arsenal too.

Boubakary Soumare, a new signing at Sevilla, made his first start in that match, and was highly impressive.

“He looked very good. He settled into the game, growing more and more into it. He helped us grow into it too. He is a physical footballer, who helps a lot to ensure an even press, and who also had a great percentage of success in passing. I need a very intelligent footballer in that position who knows how to build,” he told Diario AS.

Alonso comes in with low expectations, but if he can get a result against a strong Arsenal side, excitement in Seville will grow quickly. After a tough spell as manager of Uruguay, Alonso now has the chance to build his reputation at one of the premier clubs in Europe.
