Atletico Madrid remember ‘shame game’ in history against Celtic with special kit

Atletico Madrid will wear a limited edition red kit against Celtic on Wednesday night as the two face off in the Champions League. It comes 50 years on from when the two met at Celtic Park in the European Cup, when Los Colchoneros would go on to make the final in 1974.

The first leg in Glasgow was known as ‘the shame game’ after Atletico drew 0-0 but were reduced to eight men, in a brutal game seeing 51 fouls. Jimmy Johnstone has claimed he never received as many fouls as he did in that match, and the two sets of players fought in the tunnel afterwards.

For Atletico it held happy memories though, as they won 2-0 in Madrid, and went on to make the final against Bayern Munich, where ultimately they would earn nickname Pupas, or bottlers, for conceding with one minute to go in extra time. So close to their first European Cup, Atletico lost the replay 4-0.

Los Rojiblancos, who traditionally play in red and white stripes, will play in an all red shirt and blue shorts to commemorate the occasion, and sell limited edition kits in the process.
