Last month, former Athletic Club and Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa was appointed as the new head coach of the Uruguay national team.
It is the Argentine’s first gig since leaving Leeds in February 2022, and he will oversee his first matches in charge later this month, as Uruguay take on Nicaragua (15/06) and Cuba (21/06) in international friendlies.
Bielsa has decided to ring the changes in his first squad, leaving out Ronald Araujo and Federico Valverde of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. Darwin Nunez and Manuel Ugarte are among the names to also miss out.

Fabricio Diaz, who has starred for Uruguay’s U20s over the last few months, which has seen him linked with a move to Barcelona, has been included, alongside other new additions as Bielsa looks to freshen his squad up.
Barcelona and Real Madrid won’t be complaining that their players have missed out on call-ups, meaning that they can get a proper rest following their final matches on Sunday, after what has been a gruelling season for all involved.
