Premier League to follow La Liga on betting ban

The Premier League is set to follow in La Liga’s footsteps by implementing a ban on betting companies regarding sponsorship.

Last summer Primera and Segunda clubs were banned from sporting betting companies on their shirts, in an effort to combat gambling addictions in Spain. It was a government passed initiative backed by La Liga. This did receive some pushback from clubs, citing the financial hit meant, shortly off the back of the Covid-19 pandemic

On Thursday afternoon the Premier League announced they would also be implementing a similar ban. It will not be as far-reaching as the La Liga ban, with Premier League sides still allowed gambling businesses on their shirts, but not as their main shirt sponsor. They say it was a decision taken after consultation with the clubs, fans and government.

The ban will not come into force until 2025/26 to ‘help with the transition away from gambling sponsorship’.

Gambling advertising is widespread across football, particularly on television. However in Spain there is a concerted effort to ensure it is cut down on during football matches.
