Real Madrid handed major injury news ahead of derby against Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid will face their crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid on the back of two morale-boosting victories, and the good news continues to flow for Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid have kept just four clean sheets in La Liga this season, one of which on Sunday against Athletic Club, Los Blancos may have crucial central defender David Alaba back.

The Austrian defender has been out of action since the 7th of January, when he was injured against Villarreal. With his recuperation period approaching three weeks, Diario AS say it will be touch and go for the Madrid derby.

Alaba began training last week, and was working with the ball on Friday. He has upped the intensity this week and Ancelotti will take a decision on his fitness on Wednesday.

The Austrian defender has suffered from the same injury as Aurelien Tchouameni, who is not far behind Alaba. Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal and Eden Hazard are all ruled out of action.

Having stemmed the flow of goals against Athletic Club, Real Madrid will be more confident about going into their fixture against Atletico Madrid. However Antonio Rudiger has struggled frequently this season and Alaba would represent the trusted central defensive partnership from last season alongside with Eder Militao.
