Gerard Pique faces race against time to be fit for Barcelona’s trip to Real Betis

Barcelona beat Mallorca 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

It was an important result given how poor their form had been in recent weeks. Memphis Depay opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Sergio Busquets doubled their lead in the 54th.

Antonio Jose Raillo Arenas’ 79th minute strike was a consolation.

One negative of the fixture, however, was the injury suffered by Gerard Pique. The Catalan has been playing through the pain in recent weeks and it caught up with him on Sunday.

Pique is still an essential component of Barcelona’s defence according to Marca. He can be the difference between a winning, competitive Barcelona and one that’s defensively disconnected.

Pique, 35, is a leader at Camp Nou and his absence often coincides with moments of weakness from his colleagues. He wasn’t available for their defeats to Eintracht Frankfurt, Cadiz or Rayo Vallecano, for instance.

And now he faces a race against time to be ready for Saturday’s must-win La Liga clash with Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin.

Los Verdiblancos, fresh from their success in the Copa del Rey, are determined to make it into the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League. Should they beat Getafe this evening they’ll move within a single point of Atletico Madrid.
