Etienne Capoue reveals Unai Emery’s plan against Bayern Munich

Villarreal are still basking in the glow of their historic acheivement last night and Etienne Capoue was no different.

The Yellow Submarine took a 1-0 lead to the Allianz Arena and although Robert Lewandowski levelled things for Bayern Munich early in the second half, a late Samuel Chukwueze goal put Villarreal into the semi-finals.

Speaking after the match, Capoue took time to join Dani Parejo and Unai Emery in showing their distaste for the narrative around the tie. Mundo Deportivo carried his quotes, as the Frenchman spoke to bein Sports.

“Everything the press said, that motivated us. I think they lacked a little humility. It’s incredible, we’re impacting all of Europe!”

Capoue then moved onto the ideas that Emery had instilled into the team ahead of the match, explaining how they got through a long 90 minutes.

“We were solid, we knew we were going to suffer but we had a plan: let them come and defend well, and we knew we would have an opportunity. We showed it, we gambled everything, one goal was enough to get through to the semi-finals.”

The central midfielder’s joy was evident as laughed and smiled his way through the interview. He even hinted that there is a belief they can go all the way.

“We are giant-slayers! No, in reality I don’t think we are giant-slayers, but we are a solid team, we played with heart, we enjoyed the moment. We’re living a dream, we need to take advantage of the moment. We didn’t win anything today, we’re just in the semi-finals.”

Villarreal will face the winners of Liverpool-Benfica, who face off on Wednesday night. The home side hold a 3-1 advantage over the Portuguese.
