Barcelona handed good news over Cesar Azpilicueta amid contract fears

Barcelona are still in limbo in their bid to land Cesar Azpilicueta this summer.

The Blaugrana are hoping to land the experienced Spain international on a free contract this summer.

Azpilicueta is out of contract with Chelsea and headed for the exit door as things stand, with the West London club under UK government sanctions.

The sanctions mean Chelsea cannot give out new contracts nor purchase new players, at least while the restrictions remain as they are.

News broke today of Barca agreeing a deal with Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, who is also leaving Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

But negotiations are not that advanced with Azpilicueta, at least not yet.

Chelsea do have an option to unilaterally extend the full back’s deal, but they are also barred from activating that.

There were some fears that the Blues may have got around to it before the sanctions came in.

But according to Marca, that is not the case, with the report claiming Azpilicueta nor Barca are aware of the renewal option being activated at this point.

That’s good news for Barca.
