Atletico Madrid picked up another crucial three points in their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League last night with a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano.
It was another solid win from Diego Simeone’s side, who created several chances in the first half, but relied on a lovely interchange between Koke Resurreccion and Joao Felix to settle the match.
Although Rayo did create one or two chances to level the match, most notably an effort put high into the night sky by Randy Nteka, it was another pleasing performance for Los Colchoneros.
The only sour note came towards the end of the match, as Angel Correa was given his marching orders by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero. There was little protest from the Argentine.
In his match report, Munuera Montero noted that Correa had shouted ‘the **** of your mother’ at him and that show of dissent was the cause of the sending off, as per Marca.
The Argentine forward will be suspended for their next match against Alaves and possibly their match with Mallorca after that, with the disciplinary panel to decide on a sanction of 1-3 matches.
This is not the first time Argentines have fallen foul of Spanish referees with that same phrase, with Javier Mascherano sent off for the same offence back in 2015.
