Atletico Madrid substitute sets red card record

Atletico Madrid youngster Javier Serrano set a somewhat unwanted record during his side’s 2-1 victory over Cadiz on Friday night.

A crucial victory for Atletico Madrid ahead of their trip to Manchester United in midweek, Los Colchoneros kept up their winning run in La Liga thanks to goals from Joao Felix and Rodrigo de Paul.

The match was not without controversy however. Referee Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes had initially sent off Reinildo Mandava for two-footed challenge in the first half. Following a VAR review, that was downgraded to a yellow card.

Late on in the second half, Javi Serrano came on for Felix, but only lasted a total of 4 minutes and 49 seconds, as he himself was sent off for a lunging tackle.

Serrano becomes the face of the fastest sending off for a substitute this season. As pointed out by SPORT, in 2020 Ansu Fati also lasted just 4 minutes and 37 seconds against Espanyol – this being the fastest red card since then.
