Rodrigo de Paul has fallen out of favour at Atletico Madrid after a bright start

Rodrigo de Paul is going through a tough moment at Atletico Madrid according to a report by Diario AS. The 27-year-old Argentine has gone from star signing to the fifth-choice midfielder at the Wanda Metropolitano. He didn’t cost €40m for that.

Because back in July, when he was leaving Udinese, De Paul was wanted by all the heavyweights. They admired his ability on the ball, his capability to change direction, his superb passing range. He was a player who could decide matches and he arrived in the Spain off the back of helping Argentina win the Copa America.

But seven months into his stint at the Wanda Metropolitano that initial blaze of glory has faded. In the dressing room he associates with Angel Correa and Luis Suarez, but not many others. The only hope he holds of rescuing of his debut season at Atletico is stepping up to the plate and replacing Geoffrey Kondogbia, who’s just picked up an injury and looks set to miss Los Colchoneros’ Champions League last 16 return leg against Manchester United.
