Manchester United supporters are growing concerned by Raphael Varane’s continued absence

Raphael Varane suffered a thigh injury in early November and hasn’t featured for Manchester United since. The French centre-back, who joined the club in the summer from Real Madrid, currently has no return date. It’s something that’s fostering concern at Old Trafford according to a report in Diario AS.

Michael Carrick, United’s interim coach after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, simply said that the idea he could return this week was impossible. “Raphael’s rehab is going very well,” Carrick said. “He’s out on the grass, but he won’t be back at any point this week, no way. It’ll be a little further away than that. He’s progressing, though, which is good.”

United have a crucial Christmas period coming up. They host Arsenal tonight, and will face Crystal Palace, Young Boys, Norwich City, Brentford, Brighton, Newcastle and Burnley before the New Year. They currently sit tenth in the Premier League table – eleven points clear of bottom place and 15 off the top of the league.

Varane has featured for a grand total of 712 minutes so far this season since his £36m move from Madrid. He’s made six appearances in the Premier League and three in the Champions League, and is living a similar situation to his old defensive partner at the Santiago Bernabeu, Sergio Ramos, who’s played just one game for Paris Saint-Germain since joining them in the summer on a free transfer. The Spanish press have been quick to praise Florentino Perez for letting both go and signing David Alaba, who’s been imperious since, to replace them.
