Brazil legend Cafu still has big hopes for Philippe Coutinho despite his Barcelona struggles.

Coutinho has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at Barcelona in 2018 from Liverpool.

Barca spent well over €100million to snap up Coutinho, who had become one of the best players in the world at Liverpool.

But he has not reached anywhere near those levels for Barca, featuring sparingly in his early years for the club and suffering a serious injury last season.

He is now back fit and featuring a little more commonly this season, but his fight to reach his previous level is very much ongoing.

Though, Brazil legend Cafu believes he can return to his very best.

“We have big hopes for him,” the former defender told Diario AS. “He is a sensational player. At Liverpool, he hoarded the attention from the world and that is not a coincidence.

“He is a player that Barcelona needs, the same for Brazil. Playing at your maximum capacity is necessary for both.”

At 29 years of age, Coutinho still has time to reach his best level at Barcelona, and the arrival of Xavi Hernandez as head coach could certainly help him.

But there is no doubt the clock is ticking, especially given Barcelona’s financial situation and the temptation to cut their losses on Coutinho.
