Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in the Premier League has sparked hysteria. The Portuguese has rejoined Manchester United after over a decade away, spent in La Liga with Real Madrid and Serie A with Juventus. He made his second debut for the club at the weekend, scoring a brace in a 4-1 defeat of Newcastle United.

He’s followed that up by scoring the opening goal in United’s first Champions League game of the 2021/22 season, away in Switzerland against Young Boys. Bruno Fernandes assisted his compatriot to give United the lead in the 13th minute. It’s a lightning start to his second United career, with the Portuguese said to be determined to prove he’s still got it.

Villarreal, who beat United in the final of the Europa League last season and are coached by former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, as well as high-flying Italian outfit Atalanta are United’s other opponents in their group. Aside from Cristiano, United have recruited Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Madrid. They’re expecting to challenge this year.
