Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos to be operated upon today due to knee discomfort

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos will be operated upon today due to discomfort in his knee according to Cope and carried by El Chiringuito. He’s expected to be unavailable for selection for between six and seven weeks.

The news is a blow to Zinedine Zidane as he tries to shift the focus of his team to finishing the season strongly and fighting for La Liga and the Champions League, their two opportunities remaining to win silverware.

Ramos could miss several key games for Madrid. Los Blancos face Huesca, Getafe, Valencia, Real Valladolid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid and Elche in La Liga during that period, as well as their two-legged Champions League last 16 clash with Atalanta.

The Andalusian is a titanic presence in a team that’s decidedly unsure of themselves, able to pull them through difficult moments and win football matches.

Ramos is also in the midst of contract negotiations with Madrid that aren’t exactly bearing fruit, so it’s a difficult month-and-a-half ahead for him and the club.
