Almeria poised to appoint former Real Madrid midfielder Guti?

Almeria have hinted that former Real Madrid midfielder Guti will be announced as their Coach to replace the sacked Pedro Emanuel.

In the immediate aftermath of the club confirming the surprise departure of Emanuel, they wrote on Twitter: “A number 14 has been seen flying over the stadium…”

This has been interpreted, including by Marca, to mean that Guti – who famously wore the number 14 shirt at Real Madrid – has been lined up by the club.

Former Real Madrid youth team coach Guti departed his coaching capacity at Turkish giants Besiktas at the end of last season, where he was assistant to Şenol Güneş for a season.

The Andalusian club are five games unbeaten and have lost just two of their 14 league games to date this season – but trail league leaders Cadiz by 10 points.

Saudi Arabian businessman Turki Al-Sheikh successfully completed his takeover of the club in August in a €25m deal and sanctioned strong investment including signing Nottingham Forest winger and England youth international Arvin Appiah in a club record €8.2m deal.

Emanuel was only appointed boss of the club following the takeover, having previously been at the helm of Al-Taawoun in Saudi Arabia.

Previous club owner Alfonso Garcia was ready to sell and the Saudi investor who has been around the world of football for several years, took control.

A former Minister for Sport in Saudi Arabia, Al-Sheikh has become the club’s largest shareholder and is said to be intent on restoring their status in La Liga.

Alfonso Garcia has been at the head of the club for the last 16 years and despite the club spending six seasons in La Liga since 2007, they have struggled in the second tier since their 2015 relegation.
